About Lucy Browne

Genealogist and Local Historian

I am a History graduate of the University of Wales (Lampeter), with a post-graduate teaching qualification. From 2008, I studied with the Institute of Heraldic and Genealogical Studies (IHGS) in Canterbury and achieved both the Higher Certificate in Genealogy and the Diploma in Genealogy, the IHGS Professional Qualification.

I worked for twelve years in the Westcountry Studies Library in Exeter, with its vast historic collection of published and manuscript sources of all subjects pertaining to Devon, Cornwall, Somerset and Dorset, and more latterly in the Devon Heritage Centre, formally the Devon Record Office.

I have run family history workshops in branch libraries all over Devon, and individual support sessions for family history enthusiasts at every stage of their research. I am a member of Council for the Association of Genealogists and Researchers in Archives (AGRA) and a Tutor and Mentor for the IHGS Correspondence Course and the Diploma Course in Genealogy.

I am a member of the Devon Buildings Group and the Devon Family History Society.

When not working for clients, I research my own family which so far include land-owning gentry, cotton workers, stone masons, grocers, navy and merchant navy officers and ratings, and a long line of Anglican clergy. As with every family, I never know what – or who – might turn up next.
